What Cold Laser Therapy Is

Cold laser — also called low-level laser therapy or photobiomodulation — uses specific wavelengths of light to penetrate the skin and stimulate cellular activity in the tissue underneath. The light energy supports mitochondrial function, reduces inflammation, and accelerates tissue repair. "Cold" refers to the fact that it doesn't heat the tissue noticeably — unlike a surgical laser, which cuts. You feel nothing during the session except the gentle pressure of the laser head against your skin.

Conditions We Treat

Cold Laser Therapy is most effective for these conditions. If you're unsure whether it fits your situation, that's what the evaluation is for.

  • Acute and chronic tendinitis
  • Sprains and soft-tissue strains
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Joint inflammation
  • Chronic neck and back pain
  • Post-injury and post-surgical tissue recovery

Class IV Laser at 980 nm

We use a Class IV therapeutic laser delivering light at 980 nanometers — a near-infrared wavelength absorbed by water and cellular components in injured tissue. That energy stimulates mitochondrial activity (cytochrome c oxidase), boosting ATP production, reducing inflammation, and accelerating tissue repair. Class IV systems deliver more energy per session than lower-power lasers, so a meaningful clinical dose is delivered in just 3–5 minutes per region.

What to Expect

  1. 1

    Evaluation

We identify the tissue and depth involved in your pain so we know where to target the laser. Cold laser is most effective when the diagnosis is clear and the right area is treated.

  2. 2

    Treatment

You lie or sit comfortably while the laser handpiece is moved across the treatment zone. You may feel a mild warmth; most patients feel essentially nothing. Sessions typically last 3–5 minutes per area.

  3. 3

    Course of Treatment

A typical course is 6–10 sessions, usually 2–3 times per week initially, tapering as the tissue responds. Some chronic conditions respond faster than others.

  4. 4

    Progress Tracking

We measure pain and function as we go, so we can confirm cold laser is working — or pivot if it isn't.

The Practical Stuff

Number of sessions

A typical course is 6–10 sessions, usually 2–3 times per week initially, then tapering. Some patients respond faster; some chronic conditions need more.

Downtime

No downtime. You walk in and out under your own power. There's no soreness or activity restriction afterward — you can return to normal life immediately.

Insurance & cost

Cold laser therapy is not covered by insurance. We don't publish pricing online — cost is discussed during your evaluation. Care Credit financing is available.

Cold Laser as a Force Multiplier

Cold laser on its own can help — but it's most powerful when paired with the rest of a coordinated plan: chiropractic care to address joint mechanics, therapeutic exercise to rebuild the supporting muscles, and modalities like shockwave when the situation calls for it. Used inside a complete plan, cold laser accelerates the recovery the rest of the work is already driving.

Common Questions

Does cold laser hurt?+

No. Most patients feel essentially nothing during treatment — at most a mild warmth. There are no needles, no incisions, and no anesthesia required.

How quickly will I notice a change?+

Many patients notice improvement within the first few sessions. Acute injuries often respond faster than chronic ones. Your provider can give a realistic estimate during your evaluation.

Is it safe?+

Yes. Class IV therapeutic laser is widely used in clinical settings. There are some specific situations — pregnancy, certain cancers, eye exposure — where treatment is modified or avoided. We screen for these during your evaluation.

Is there downtime?+

None. You can return to all normal activity immediately, including exercise.

Will insurance cover it?+

No. Cold laser is considered an elective modality and is not covered. Care Credit is available if cost is a concern.
